Instagram Text Formatter
Write bold, italic and underlined Instagram captions and bios, add bullet lists and line breaks, and copy them in one click.
Instagram has no bold or italic button for captions, comments or bios, so this free Instagram text formatter does it for you. Type or paste your caption, select words and make them bold, italic, underlined or struck through, switch to fonts like script or monospace, and add bullets, ticks or numbered lists. Tidy the spacing, check the live Instagram post preview and the 2,200-character counter, then copy your caption and paste it straight into Instagram. Your text never leaves your browser, and the tool is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

How Do You Format Text on Instagram?
To format text on Instagram, type or paste your caption into the editor, select the words you want to change and click B (bold), I (italic), U (underline) or S (strikethrough). Add bullets or numbered lists from the Lists menu, check the preview, then click Copy post and paste it into Instagram. The formatting stays because the tool turns your letters into Unicode characters that Instagram shows in the iPhone and Android apps and on instagram.com.
Instagram captions, comments and bios only accept plain text, so there is no built-in bold or italic option. An Instagram text formatter gets around this by swapping normal letters for look-alike Unicode symbols, such as 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 for bold. Because they are characters, not styling, they survive copy and paste and appear for everyone who sees your post, on any device.
The formatting happens in your browser, so your caption is never uploaded or stored. You get a preview card that looks like a real Instagram post, a live character and word count against the 2,200-character caption limit, and a reminder of where Instagram cuts your caption off with “more”. Undo, redo, paste from clipboard, a sample post and download as a .txt file are all built in.
Common reasons to format Instagram captions:
- Make the first line of your caption stand out before the "more" cut-off.
- Highlight offers, prices, dates or key tips in bold.
- Break long captions and carousel posts into scannable bullet or numbered lists.
- Add dividers and emojis to separate ideas and keep hashtags apart from your caption.
- Style your Instagram bio so your niche and call to action stand out.
- Format comments, Reels captions, carousel captions and pinned comments.
What each option does:
| Option | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bold, Italic, Bold italic | Turns selected text into Unicode bold or italic letters. | Hooks, offers, headings and key tips. |
| Underline & Strikethrough | Adds a line under or through each character. | Emphasis, or showing an old and new price. |
| Fonts | Sans bold, Sans italic, Monospace, Script, Bold script, Fraktur, Double-struck and Small caps. | Short headings, a name or your bio. Avoid styling a whole caption. |
| Lists | Bullets, arrows, checkmarks, green ticks, pointers, sparkles, checkboxes, numbers and emoji numbers. | Recipes, steps, tips, features and checklists. |
| Insert | Ready-made dividers and popular emojis. | Separating sections and moving hashtags below your caption. |
| Clean up | Clear styling, tidy spacing, space out lines, remove blank lines. | Fixing text pasted from Notes, Word, Google Docs or ChatGPT. |
Good to know
- Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but only the first ~125 show before "more", so put your hook first.
- Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags per post, so choose relevant ones and keep them in plain text at the end.
- Styled letters are Unicode symbols, so Instagram search may not match them and screen readers may spell them out. Use them for short highlights, not full captions.
- Decorative fonts like Fraktur or Double-struck may not display on very old phones. Bold and italic work almost everywhere.
- Your text stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded, saved or shared.

Which Instagram Text Style Should I Use?

How to Format an Instagram Caption (3 Steps)
Write or paste your caption
Type in the editor, click Paste to bring in text from your clipboard, or click Sample to try a ready-made post. The counter tracks Instagram's 2,200-character caption limit as you type.
Format your text
Select words and click B, I, BI, U or S. Open Fonts for styles like script or monospace, Lists for bullets and numbers, Insert for dividers and emojis, and Clean up to fix spacing. Check the preview as you go.
Copy and post on Instagram
Click Copy post, open Instagram, start a new post, Reel or comment, or edit your bio, and paste. Your bold text, italics and lists appear just like the preview. You can also download it as a .txt file.
Tip: if your line breaks disappear on Instagram, remove spaces at the end of each line with Clean up → Tidy spacing, and use Space out lines or Remove blank lines to control the gaps before you copy.
Which Formatting Should I Use for Each Type of Instagram Post?
| Post type | Formatting | Lists | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed photo caption | Bold first line | Short lines, no list | Put the hook in the first 125 characters |
| Carousel or tips post | Bold title | Numbered or emoji numbers | Match each point to a slide |
| Reels caption | Bold hook or keyword | Arrows or pointers 👉 | Keep it short and end with a call to action |
| Product launch or offer | Bold product name or price | Green ticks for features | Add a 🚀 or 🔥 emoji |
| Event or giveaway | Bold date and rules | Checkboxes or numbered steps | Use a divider before the details |
| Instagram bio | Bold or small caps for a few words | Short lines or emoji bullets | Keep keywords in plain text and stay under 150 characters |
Writing an Instagram caption that is easy to read:
- Lead with a strong hook in the first line, since only about 125 characters show before "more".
- Keep lines short, with a line break between ideas.
- Use bold for a few key words, not whole sentences.
- Use lists for steps, tips or features, and match carousel captions to your slides.
- End with a question or call to action to invite comments, saves and shares, then add up to 5 relevant hashtags.
After you format your caption, you can paste the same text into Instagram comments, Reels, carousels, your bio or your name field. Because the formatting is made of Unicode characters, it also works on Facebook, Threads, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, TikTok and other sites that only accept plain text.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I bold text on Instagram?
Instagram has no bold button. Paste your caption into this formatter, select the words, click B, then copy the post and paste it into Instagram. The bold text is made of Unicode characters, so it stays bold.
How do I italicize or underline text on Instagram?
Select the text and click I for italic or U for underline, or press Ctrl/Cmd + I or Ctrl/Cmd + U. Then copy the post and paste it into your Instagram caption, comment or bio.
Is this Instagram text formatter free?
Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up, no limits and no watermark.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
No. All formatting runs in your browser. Your post is never sent to a server or stored.
Does formatted text work in the Instagram app?
Yes. Bold, italic and lists show in the Instagram app for iPhone and Android and on instagram.com. A few decorative fonts may not show on very old devices.
How do I add bullet points to an Instagram caption?
Select the lines and open Lists. Choose bullets, arrows, checkmarks, green ticks, pointers, sparkles, checkboxes or numbers. Choose Remove list to undo it.
Can I use different fonts on Instagram?
Yes. Open Fonts and choose Sans bold, Sans italic, Monospace, Script, Bold script, Fraktur, Double-struck or Small caps, then paste the text into your caption, comments or bio.
What is the character limit for an Instagram caption?
Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but only the first ~125 show before "more". Bios allow 150 characters. The counter under the editor shows your characters and words as you type.
Does styled text count as more characters on Instagram?
It can. Emojis and most Unicode bold, italic and fancy-font letters are made of more than one code unit, so they may count as two characters, especially in your 150-character bio. Style only the words that matter and leave a little room under the limit.
Does bold text affect Instagram search?
Styled letters are different Unicode characters, so Instagram search may not match them. Keep important keywords, your name, @mentions and hashtags in plain text.
Is formatted text accessible to screen readers?
Screen readers may read Unicode letters one by one or skip them. Use styled text for short highlights and keep your main message in regular text.
Can I format my Instagram bio, name or comments?
Yes. Format the text here, copy it and paste it into your Instagram bio, name field, comments, Reels captions or carousel captions.
How do I remove formatting from text?
Select the text and choose Clean up → Clear styling. It turns bold, italic and fancy fonts back into normal letters.
How do I add line breaks to an Instagram caption?
Press Enter in the editor to start a new line, then use Clean up → Tidy spacing to remove trailing spaces that can make Instagram merge lines. Space out lines adds a blank line between ideas, and Remove blank lines tightens the caption.
Can I add emojis and dividers to my caption?
Yes. Open Insert to add dividers such as ━━━━ or ── ✦ ── and popular emojis like 🚀, ✅, ✨ and 🔥.
Why does my formatting disappear when I paste into Instagram?
Formatting from Word, Notes or Google Docs is lost because Instagram only accepts plain text. Use Copy post here instead. The Unicode characters keep their style.
Can I use this formatter for other social media?
Yes. The formatted text also works on Facebook, Threads, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, TikTok and most sites that accept plain text.
Can I save my caption?
Click Download to save your caption as a .txt file, or Copy post to paste it anywhere.
