What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a conversational AI tool built on OpenAI’s GPT family of large language models. Instead of scrolling through search results, you describe what you need in your own words and get a direct reply that you can refine with follow-up questions.

It keeps context inside a conversation, and with Memory turned on it can recall your preferences across chats. Since October 2026, answers can also include interactive charts, forms and mini tools right inside the chat window, which makes the assistant feel closer to a workspace than a chatbot.

ChatGPT key features

01

Natural conversation

Ask, instruct and refine answers in a back-and-forth chat, by text or voice.

02

Writing and editing

03

Web search with sources

Get current answers with links you can open and verify.

04

Deep research

Let the assistant read many sources and return a cited report.

05

Files and images

Upload PDFs, spreadsheets and screenshots and ask questions about them.

06

Image generation

Create and edit images from a short text prompt.

07
