Discord Text Formatter
Format Discord messages with bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, spoilers, code, lists and fancy fonts, then copy and paste in one click.
Discord uses Markdown, but remembering which asterisks, underscores and tildes to type is slow, and one missing symbol breaks the whole message. This free Discord text formatter does it for you. Type or paste your message, select words and click bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, inline code or spoiler, add bullet or numbered lists, dividers and emojis, or switch to Unicode fonts for your display name and bio. A live Discord chat preview and a 2,000-character counter show exactly how your message will look before you hit Enter. Everything runs in your browser, free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Text Never Leaves Your Browser
Bold, Italic, Spoiler & More
Private: your text is formatted in your browser and never uploaded. Discord formatting uses Markdown (**bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~, ||spoiler||) so it stays styled when you paste it into a message. Protected by Cloudflare Turnstile.
How Do You Format Text in Discord?
To format text in Discord, type or paste your message into the editor above, select the words you want to style and click B, I, U, S, Code or Spoiler. The tool wraps your text in the correct Discord Markdown, such as **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~, `code` and ||spoiler||. Click Copy message and paste it into any Discord channel, DM, thread or forum post, and Discord shows the styling on desktop, web and mobile.
Discord renders Markdown in messages, threads, forum posts, About Me bios and bot embeds, but not in usernames, display names, server names or channel names. For those places, use the Fonts menu: Unicode fonts such as script, monospace and double-struck are ordinary characters, so they keep their look anywhere you paste them.
The formatting happens in your browser, so your message is never uploaded or stored. You get a preview that looks like a real Discord #general channel, with your avatar, name and timestamp, plus a live character and word count against Discord’s 2,000-character message limit. Undo, redo, paste from clipboard, sample text and download as a .txt file are all built in.
Common reasons to format text on Discord:
- Make server announcements, event posts and giveaways easy to scan.
- Hide game, movie and TV spoilers behind ||spoiler|| tags so members choose when to reveal them.
- Share bot commands, code snippets and server IPs in monospace so nothing gets mangled.
- Turn server rules, role lists and FAQs into clean bullet or numbered lists.
- Style your display name or About Me with Unicode fonts Discord does not offer.
- Fix messy text copied from Word, Google Docs or websites before you post it.
What each option does:
| Option | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bold, Italic, Bold italic | Wraps the selected text in **, * or *** so Discord shows it bold, italic or both. | Key words in announcements, rule numbers and calls to action. |
| Underline, Strikethrough | Wraps text in __ for underline or ~~ for strikethrough. | Must-read lines and deadlines; crossing out an old time or a joke correction. |
| Code | Wraps text in backticks so it shows as monospace inline code. | Bot commands, server IPs, file names and snippets that must be copied exactly. |
| Spoiler | Wraps text in || so it stays hidden until a reader clicks it. | Plot twists, game endings, quiz answers and surprise reveals. |
| Fonts | Swaps letters for Unicode sans bold, sans italic, monospace, script, bold script, Fraktur, double-struck or small caps. | Display names, nicknames, About Me headers and anywhere Markdown does not render. |
| Lists | Adds bullets, arrows, checkmarks, green ticks, pointers, sparkles, checkboxes, numbers or emoji numbers to each line. | Server rules, role menus, patch notes and event schedules. |
| Insert | Adds dividers, symbols and emojis at the cursor. | Separating sections in announcements and rules channels. |
| Clean up | Clears styling, tidies spacing, spaces out lines or removes blank lines. | Fixing text pasted from Word, Google Docs, notes apps or websites. |
Good to know
- Discord messages are capped at 2,000 characters (4,000 with Nitro). Markdown symbols count toward the limit, so check the counter before you copy.
- Markdown only works when the symbols wrap the text with no space inside. Typing ** bold** with a space shows the raw asterisks instead.
- Usernames, display names, server names and channel names ignore Markdown. Use Unicode fonts from the Fonts menu there instead.
- To show a symbol as plain text, put a backslash before it, for example \*not italic\*.
- Screen readers may spell out Unicode-styled letters one by one, so use Markdown for messages and keep fancy fonts for short names.

Which Discord Text Style Should You Use?

How to Format Text for Discord (3 Steps)
Write or paste your message
Type in the editor, click Paste to bring in text from your clipboard, or click Sample to try a ready-made Discord message.
Format your text
Select words and click B, I, BI, U, S, Code or Spoiler, open Fonts for Unicode styles, and use Lists, Insert and Clean up to finish your message.
Copy and paste into Discord
Click Copy message, open Discord, then paste into the message box of any channel, DM or thread, or into About Me under User Settings › Profiles.
Tip: check the chat preview and the 2,000-character counter before you copy, because Discord will not send a message over the limit unless you have Nitro. Markdown symbols count as characters too, so a heavily styled message fills up faster than it looks.
Which Formatting Should I Use on Discord?
| Where on Discord | Formatting | Lists | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel messages | Bold one or two key words | Short bullets if needed | Keep it short so it does not get lost in a busy channel. |
| Announcements and events | Bold headline, a few emojis | Arrows or pointers for steps | Put the date, time and link on their own lines. |
| Rules channel | Bold rule titles | Numbered lists | Number each rule so moderators can say “see rule 3”. |
| About Me bio (190 characters) | Bold, italic or Unicode fonts | Short bullets for links or pronouns | Watch the counter so the whole bio fits. |
| Display name and nickname (32 characters) | Unicode fonts only | None | Markdown does not render in names, so use the Fonts menu. |
| Spoilers and commands | ||Spoiler|| and `code` | Bullets for several commands | Spoiler anything that could ruin a story for other members. |
Writing a Discord message that is easy to read:
- Lead with the key point, because members skim busy channels.
- Style one or two words, not the whole message.
- Break rules and announcements into short lines with bullets or numbers.
- Use spoilers for story details and code for anything people need to copy.
- Check how it reads on a phone, since many members use the mobile app.
After you format your text, you can paste it into Discord server channels, DMs, group chats, threads, forum posts, your About Me bio and bot or webhook embeds, in the Discord desktop app, the web app or the iPhone and Android apps. Markdown styles such as bold, spoilers and code display inside Discord, while Unicode fonts from the Fonts menu also work in display names and on other apps like Twitch, Instagram, X and TikTok. Most of those apps do not read Discord Markdown, so symbols like **bold** appear as plain text there.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make text bold in Discord?
Select the words in the editor and click B. The tool wraps them in two asterisks, like **this**, which Discord shows as bold. Click Copy message and paste it into any channel or DM. You can also type the asterisks yourself.
How do I make text italic, underlined or strikethrough in Discord?
Select the text and click I for italic (*text*), U for underline (__text__) or S for strikethrough (~~text~~). Click BI for bold italic (***text***). Styles can be combined, for example __**bold underline**__.
How do I add a spoiler in Discord?
Select the text and click Spoiler. The tool wraps it in two vertical bars, like ||this||, and Discord hides it behind a dark block until a reader clicks it. You can also mark an image as a spoiler when you upload it.
How do I write inline code or a code block in Discord?
Click Code to wrap text in single backticks, like `this`, for inline code. For a multi-line code block, put three backticks on the line before and after your text, and add a language name after the first three, such as ```js, for syntax highlighting.
Is this Discord text formatter free?
Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up, no usage limits and no watermark.
Is my text private?
Yes. All formatting runs in your browser on your own device. Your text is never uploaded, stored or shared.
Does Discord formatting work on mobile?
Yes. Discord Markdown displays in the desktop app, the web app and the iPhone and Android apps, so everyone in the channel sees the same styling.
How do I add bullet points or a numbered list?
Select the lines and open Lists. Choose bullets, arrows, checkmarks, green ticks, pointers, sparkles, checkboxes, numbers or emoji numbers. Discord also turns lines that start with “- ” or “1. ” into proper lists.
How do I make headers or small text in Discord?
Start a line with #, ## or ### and a space for a large, medium or small header, or with -# and a space for small grey subtext. Headers only work at the start of a line and suit announcements and rules better than chat.
Why are Markdown symbols showing instead of formatting?
Discord only applies Markdown when the symbols wrap the text with no space inside, like **bold**, not ** bold **. Every opening symbol also needs a matching closing one. The formatter adds the symbols correctly for you.
How do I use a fancy font in my Discord name or bio?
Open Fonts, pick a style such as script, monospace or double-struck, then copy and paste the text into your display name, server nickname or About Me under User Settings › Profiles. Names ignore Markdown, so Unicode fonts are the only way to style them.
What is the Discord character limit?
Messages are limited to 2,000 characters, or 4,000 with Nitro. About Me bios allow 190 characters, and display names and nicknames allow 32. The counter tracks characters and words as you type.
Why does my styled text show as boxes or question marks?
Some older phones, browsers or fonts do not include every Unicode character, so fancy fonts can show as empty boxes or question marks. Discord Markdown styles like bold, italic and spoilers do not have this problem.
Is formatted text accessible for screen readers?
Markdown bold, italic, underline and spoilers are read as normal words. Unicode fonts may be read letter by letter or skipped, so keep them for short names and headers.
How do I remove formatting from my text?
Open Clean up and click Clear styling to return your text to plain text. Tidy spacing, Space out lines and Remove blank lines fix messy layouts copied from other apps.
How do I add line breaks in Discord?
Press Enter in the editor to start a new line, then copy the message. When typing directly in Discord, press Shift + Enter for a new line, because Enter sends the message.
Can I use this formatted text in other apps?
Unicode fonts from the Fonts menu work almost anywhere, including Twitch, Instagram, X and TikTok. Discord Markdown such as **bold** only displays in apps that read Markdown and shows as plain symbols elsewhere.
How do I save my text for later?
Click Download to save your formatted text as a .txt file. The editor does not store your text, so save or copy it before you close the page.
