Why Convert AVIF to JPG?
AVIF to JPG conversion re-saves an AVIF image as a JPG file. AVIF is a modern, highly compressed image format, but many apps, editors, upload forms and older devices don't support it. JPG opens almost everywhere, so convert when an AVIF image won't open, won't upload, or is rejected by software.
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a newer image format that websites use to deliver sharp pictures at very small file sizes. It was developed by the Alliance for Open Media, the same group behind the AV1 video codec. When a site serves AVIF and you save the image, you end up with a .avif file on your computer.
That is where problems start. AVIF is newer than WebP and far newer than JPG, so support in everyday software is still patchy. You may find that:
- The image won't open in your photo viewer or editor.
- A job portal, school form or marketplace says "JPG or PNG only".
- A document, slide deck or design tool rejects the file.
- An email client, print service or older device can't display it.
- A thumbnail shows blank in your file manager.
JPG fixes all of these, because it is the most widely supported image format in the world.
Good to know:
- JPG files are bigger. AVIF compresses very efficiently, so a JPG of the same image will usually be larger. Lower the quality slider if you need a smaller file.
- Transparency is replaced by a colour. JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose in Settings. To keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
- Animated AVIF becomes a still image. Only a single frame is kept.
What You Can Do With This Converter
- Control the quality. The slider starts at 90%. Lower values make smaller files, and 85–92% looks identical for most images.
- Choose the background colour. Pick white, black or any colour for transparent areas, so you don't get an unexpected dark background.
- Convert in bulk. Add up to 50 AVIF files at once, each up to 100 MB, and download them all as one ZIP.
- Private by design. Images are processed in your browser and never uploaded to a server.
- Add images your way. Drag and drop, browse, or copy an image and press Ctrl+V to paste it.
- No sign-up, no watermark, no fees.
- Works on any device. Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone, in any modern browser.
Which Image Tool Should I Use?
Pick the format your next step needs: JPG for the widest compatibility, PNG for transparency and editing, WebP or AVIF for fast websites.

Pick quality and background
Open Settings. Keep quality at 90% for a good balance, or lower it for smaller files. If your image has transparent areas, choose the background colour that should fill them.
Convert and download
Click Convert to JPG, then save each file or use Download to get all JPGs in one ZIP.
Why Did My Image Save as AVIF, and What Can I Do?
Websites choose AVIF because it keeps images sharp at very small file sizes, which makes pages load faster. When you save a picture from such a site, your browser stores the exact file the site sent, so you get an .avif file rather than a JPG. The image is not broken. Your software just doesn't recognise the format.
Your options
- Convert to JPG (this tool) for photos, email, upload forms and the widest compatibility.
- Convert to PNG if the image has a transparent background you need to keep. Teasoft's WebP to PNG tool is the closest match for transparent web images.
- Open it in a modern browser. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can display AVIF, so dragging the file into a browser tab often works as a quick preview.
- Look for another download option. Some sites offer a JPG or PNG version of the same image.
Where JPG is the safer choice
Job and government portals, online marketplaces, email attachments, print services, older desktop software, document and presentation templates, and many social or messaging uploads.
Where AVIF is fine to keep
Modern websites and online stores, where smaller files help pages load faster. If you manage a site, also see Teasoft's JPG to WebP and PNG to WebP tools.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert AVIF to JPG?
Open Teasoft's AVIF to JPG converter, add your AVIF files, choose the quality, click Convert to JPG and download the results as individual files or a ZIP.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is a modern image format based on AV1 compression. It produces very small files at good visual quality and supports transparency, but many apps and devices still can't open it.
Why does my image save as AVIF?
Many websites serve images in AVIF because the files are small and load fast. When you save the image, your browser stores the AVIF file the site sent. Converting it to JPG makes it compatible with more software.
Is AVIF better than JPG?
For websites, AVIF usually produces smaller files at similar quality. JPG is still better for compatibility, because almost every device, app, form and print service supports it.
Is AVIF better than WebP?
AVIF can compress even more than WebP, but WebP is supported by a wider range of software. Both are mainly used on websites. For sharing and uploads, JPG is the safest choice.
Does converting AVIF to JPG reduce quality?
Slightly, because JPG is a lossy format. At 85–92% quality the difference is usually not visible. Use 95% if you want to keep as much detail as possible.
Why is my JPG bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF compresses more efficiently than JPG, so a JPG at similar visual quality is usually larger. Lower the quality slider if you need a smaller file.
What happens to transparent backgrounds?
JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose in Settings. To keep transparency, convert to PNG instead.
What happens to animated AVIF files?
An animated AVIF becomes a still JPG image. Only a single frame is kept.
Can I convert many AVIF files at once?
Yes. Add up to 50 AVIF files in one batch, each up to 100 MB, and download them all as a ZIP.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Conversion happens in your browser, and your files are never uploaded.
Can I convert AVIF to JPG on my phone?
Yes. The converter works in the browser on Android, iPhone, tablets and computers. You do not need to install an app.
Is the AVIF to JPG converter free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no hidden fees.
