How Do You Convert a PDF to Excel?
To convert a PDF to Excel, add your PDF, choose a sheet layout (One sheet per page or All pages on one sheet), then click Convert to Excel and download the .xlsx file. Teasoft's PDF to Excel converter runs entirely in your browser, so your documents are never uploaded to a server.
PDFs are great for sharing but hard to work with when the data is locked inside. Copying a table from a PDF into a spreadsheet usually leaves everything pasted into one column, with broken rows and numbers stored as text. This free PDF to Excel converter does the work for you: it reads bank statements, invoices, price lists, financial reports and data tables, and gives you a clean spreadsheet with each value in its own cell, ready for formulas, charts and pivot tables.
Everything happens on your own device. Your browser opens the PDF with pdf.js, an open-source PDF library, and reads the position of every piece of text on each page. Text on the same line becomes one row, and wide gaps between words mark a new column, so the table structure of the PDF carries over into Excel. Values that look like numbers, such as 1,250.75, -42 or (300), are saved as real numeric cells, while codes with leading zeros, long ID numbers, dates and values with currency or percent signs stay as text so nothing is changed by accident. The workbook is then built with SheetJS and saved as a standard .xlsx file.
What ends up in your Excel file:
| Part of your PDF | With One sheet per page | With All pages on one sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Each line becomes a row on that page’s sheet | Each line becomes a row on a single sheet named PDF |
| Tables | Rows and columns rebuilt from text positions | Rows and columns rebuilt, with pages stacked in order |
| Numbers | Numeric cells (commas removed, minus signs and brackets read as negative) | Numeric cells, same rules |
| Pages | One worksheet per page, named Page 1, Page 2 and so on | All pages on one worksheet, with a blank row between pages |
| Images, charts and logos | Not included | Not included |
| Fonts, colours and borders | Not kept; you get plain cells to format in Excel | Not kept; you get plain cells to format in Excel |

Good to know
- Password-protected PDFs can't be converted. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF.
- Scanned PDFs are not supported. The tool needs selectable text. A scanned page or a photo of a document has no text layer, and OCR isn't available here.
- Works best with real tables. Clean, grid-style tables convert best. Paragraph text, multi-column layouts and merged cells may need a little tidying in Excel.
- Up to 500 pages per PDF. Only the first 500 pages are read. For longer files, split them first with Split PDF.
- Need a PDF again? When your spreadsheet is ready, turn it back into a PDF with Excel to PDF.
What You Can Do With This Tool
- Convert PDF to Excel for free. No software to install and no account to create.
- Get editable XLSX files. Every value lands in its own cell, ready for formulas, sorting and filtering.
- Keep the table structure. Rows and columns are rebuilt from where the text sits on each page.
- Get real numbers, not text. Amounts like 1,250.75 or (300) become numeric cells you can add up straight away.
- Protect codes and IDs. Values with leading zeros and long account numbers stay as text, exactly as printed.
- Choose your sheet layout. Put each page on its own worksheet, or stack all pages on one sheet.
- Convert up to 50 PDFs at once. Each file can be up to 150 MB and 500 pages.
- Download in one click. Get a single .xlsx file or one ZIP with every spreadsheet.
- Open your file anywhere. XLSX works in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers and WPS Office.
- Stay private. Files are converted on your device and never uploaded to a server.
- Use any device. Works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.
- No watermark. Your spreadsheet contains only your own data.
Which PDF Tool Should I Use?
Use PDF to Excel when you want to work with the numbers and tables in a PDF. If you need to edit the text as a document, save pages as images or prepare a file before converting, one of these tools may suit you better:
How to Convert PDF to Excel (3 Steps)
Add your PDF file
Drag and drop, click Add, or browse to pick your PDF. You can add up to 50 files, each up to 150 MB.
Choose a sheet layout
Pick One sheet per page to give every page its own worksheet, or All pages on one sheet to keep a long table together.
Convert and download
Click Convert to Excel, then Download. One file saves as an .xlsx spreadsheet; several files download together as a ZIP.
Tip: for the cleanest spreadsheet, convert PDFs where you can select the text and the data is laid out as a table. If the table is only on a few pages, extract them first with Split PDF.
Which Sheet Layout Should I Use?
| What you have | Layout to choose | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| A bank or credit card statement where transactions run across pages | All pages on one sheet | One continuous list of transactions you can sort and total |
| A report with a different table on each page | One sheet per page | A separate worksheet for each table, named Page 1, Page 2 and so on |
| Several invoices or receipts saved in one PDF | One sheet per page | One worksheet per invoice, easy to check side by side |
| A long price list or product catalogue | All pages on one sheet | A single list ready for filtering, sorting and lookups |
| A scanned document or a photo of a page | Neither (OCR isn’t available here) | Use a PDF with selectable text instead |
Getting better results when you convert
- Check that the text is selectable. If you can highlight words in your PDF viewer, the converter can read them. Scanned pages can't be converted here.
- Unlock protected files first. The converter can't open PDFs that need a password. Remove it with Unlock PDF if you know the password.
- Convert only the pages you need. Removing cover pages and notes with Split PDF gives you a cleaner sheet.
- Pick the right layout. Use All pages on one sheet for tables that continue across pages, and One sheet per page when every page holds a different table.
- Tidy up in Excel. Use Text to Columns, Find and Replace or number formats to fix any shifted columns, currency symbols or headers.
After you convert your PDF
- Turn it back into a PDF. Use Excel to PDF once your spreadsheet is ready to share.
- Edit the text as a document. Use PDF to Word for pages that are mostly paragraphs.
- Combine files. Use Merge PDF to join several PDFs into one.
- Protect it. Use Protect PDF to add a password before you share it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a PDF to Excel?
Add your PDF, choose One sheet per page or All pages on one sheet, then click Convert to Excel and Download. The spreadsheet saves as an .xlsx file you can open in Excel or Google Sheets.
Is the PDF to Excel converter free?
Yes. Teasoft's PDF to Excel converter is completely free, with no sign-up, no software to install and no watermark on your spreadsheet.
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No. Your PDFs are read and converted inside your browser, and the finished spreadsheet is created on your device. Only a quick Cloudflare Turnstile security check contacts our server, and it never receives your files.
Can I edit the Excel file after converting?
Yes. Every value is placed in its own cell, so you can edit, sort, filter, add formulas, build charts and create pivot tables just like in any other spreadsheet.
What is the difference between One sheet per page and All pages on one sheet?
One sheet per page creates a separate worksheet for every PDF page, named Page 1, Page 2 and so on. All pages on one sheet stacks every page on a single worksheet named PDF, with a blank row between pages, which is best for long tables that run across several pages.
Will my table formatting stay the same?
The rows, columns and values are kept, but fonts, colours, borders and merged cells are not. You get clean, unformatted cells that you can style in Excel in a few clicks.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Excel?
No. Scanned PDFs and photos of documents contain images, not selectable text, and this tool does not include OCR. If no selectable text is found, the tool tells you instead of creating an empty file.
Are numbers converted to real numbers in Excel?
Yes, where possible. Values such as 1,250.75, -42 or (300) become numeric cells, with brackets read as negative numbers. Values with leading zeros, more than 15 digits, currency symbols or percent signs are kept as text so they are not changed.
How many PDFs can I convert at once?
You can add up to 50 PDFs in one go. Each file can be up to 150 MB, and up to 500 pages per PDF are converted.
What Excel format do I get?
You get a standard .xlsx workbook, which opens in Microsoft Excel 2007 and later, Excel for Mac, Excel Online, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers and WPS Office.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. The converter can't open PDFs that need a password. If you know the password, remove it first with Teasoft's Unlock PDF tool, then convert the unlocked file.
Why are some values in the wrong column?
Columns are worked out from the gaps between pieces of text. Tables without clear spacing, cells that wrap onto two lines or multi-column page layouts can shift values into the next column. A quick fix in Excel, such as Text to Columns, usually sorts it out.
Can I convert PDF to Excel on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in mobile browsers on Android and iPhone. For very large PDFs or big batches, a computer is faster because it has more memory.
What will my Excel file be called?
Each spreadsheet keeps the name of the original PDF with an .xlsx extension, so report.pdf becomes report.xlsx. When you convert several PDFs, they download together in one ZIP file.
Does the tool add a watermark?
No. Your spreadsheet contains only the data from your PDF, with no watermark, logo or extra rows added.
Do I need Microsoft Excel to use this tool?
No. The conversion happens in your browser, and you can open the .xlsx file in free apps such as Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc or Apple Numbers.
Is there a page limit?
Up to 500 pages of each PDF are converted. If your file is longer, split it into smaller parts with Teasoft's Split PDF tool and convert each part.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes, to load the page and the conversion components. Your PDF itself is processed on your device and is never sent over the internet.
