YouTube Text Formatter
Format YouTube descriptions and comments with bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, fancy fonts and lists, then copy ready-to-paste text in one click.
YouTube has no bold or italic buttons for video descriptions, so long blocks of plain text are hard to scan and easy to skip. This free YouTube text formatter fixes that. Type or paste your description, select words and make them bold, italic, bold italic, underlined or strikethrough, or switch them to fonts like script, monospace, double-struck or small caps. Add bullets, checkmarks and numbered lists, insert dividers and emojis, tidy the spacing, then check the live YouTube preview and the 5,000-character counter before you copy. Your text never leaves your browser, and the tool is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Bold, Italic, Underline & More
Private: your text is formatted in your browser and never uploaded. Styled letters are Unicode, so screen readers may spell them out; use them for short highlights. Protected by Cloudflare Turnstile.
How Do You Format Text on YouTube?
To format text on YouTube, type or paste your description into the editor, select the words you want to change and click B (bold), I (italic), BI (bold italic), U (underline) or S (strikethrough). Open Fonts for script, monospace, Fraktur, double-struck or small caps, and Lists to turn lines into bullets or numbered steps. Then click Copy description and paste it into YouTube Studio.
YouTube descriptions do not support Markdown or rich text, so this tool uses Unicode styled characters that stay bold, italic or underlined wherever you paste them. In YouTube comments you can also use YouTube’s own markers: *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic and -hyphens- for strikethrough.
The formatting happens in your browser, so your description is never uploaded or stored. You get a preview that looks like a real YouTube description box, with a video title, channel name, view count, upload date and the …more cut-off, plus a live character and word count against YouTube’s 5,000-character description limit. Undo, redo, paste from clipboard, a sample description and download as a .txt file are all built in.
Common reasons to format YouTube descriptions:
- Make the first lines above “…more” stand out with a bold hook and a clear call to action.
- Turn chapters, timestamps and key moments into a clean, easy-to-scan list.
- Highlight links to your website, merch, socials and sponsors with arrows or pointers.
- Separate the summary, resources, gear list and credits with dividers.
- Style channel names, series titles and pinned comments so they catch the eye.
- Fix messy text pasted from Word, Notes or Google Docs before you publish.
What each option does:
| Option | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bold, Italic, Bold italic | Converts the selected letters and numbers into Unicode bold, italic or bold italic characters that keep their style when pasted into YouTube. | Opening hooks, key points, section titles and calls to action. |
| Underline and Strikethrough | Adds a Unicode line under or through each selected character. | Short emphasis, corrections, old prices and expired offers. |
| Fonts | Switches text to sans bold, sans italic, monospace, script, bold script, Fraktur, double-struck or small caps. | Channel names, series titles and short highlights. |
| Lists | Adds bullets, arrows, checkmarks, green ticks, pointers, sparkles, checkboxes, numbers or emoji numbers to each line. | Timestamps, links, gear lists, steps and key takeaways. |
| Insert | Adds ready-made line, double-line, dot and sparkle dividers and popular emojis at the cursor. | Splitting long descriptions into sections and adding personality. |
| Clean up | Clear styling, tidy spacing, space out lines, remove blank lines. | Fixing text pasted from Word, Notes or Google Docs before you publish. |
Good to know
- YouTube descriptions can hold up to 5,000 characters, and styled letters, symbols and emojis all count toward that limit.
- Only the first two or three lines show before “…more”, so put your hook, key link or call to action there.
- YouTube search and Google may not read styled letters as normal words, so keep important keywords in plain text.
- Screen readers may spell out styled letters one by one, so use them for short highlights rather than whole paragraphs.
- YouTube does not allow angle brackets (< and >) in descriptions, so remove them before you save.

How to Format a YouTube Description (3 Steps)
Write or paste your description
Type in the editor, click Paste to bring in text from your clipboard, or click Sample to try a ready-made description. The counter shows your characters and words as you type.
Format your text
Select words and click B, I, BI, U or S, open Fonts for script, monospace or double-struck styles, and use Lists, Insert and Clean up to structure your description. The preview updates as you go.
Copy and paste into YouTube
Click Copy description, open YouTube Studio, choose your video and paste into the Description box, then click Save. You can also download your description as a .txt file.
Tip: put your hook, main link or call to action in the first two lines, because YouTube shows only the start of a description before “…more”. Use the preview to check the cut-off, and keep keywords in plain text so YouTube search can read them.
Which Formatting Should I Use for Each Type of YouTube Video?
| Video type | Formatting | Lists | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tutorial or how-to | Bold step titles and section headers | Numbered 1. for steps | Add timestamps so viewers can jump to each step. |
| Review or comparison | Bold product names and the verdict | Checkmarks ✔️ for pros | Put links to the products near the top. |
| Vlog or story | Italic for quotes and side notes | Minimal, or pointers 👉 for links | Keep it short and add your socials at the end. |
| Music video or podcast | Bold song or episode title, italic for credits | Bullets • for credits and guests | Put streaming links in the first lines. |
| Gaming or livestream | Fancy fonts for the channel or series name | Arrows ➤ for rules and links | Use dividers between schedule, rules and links. |
| Sponsored video or announcement | Bold the offer and dates, strikethrough for old prices | Green ticks ✅ for key points | Disclose the sponsorship clearly near the top. |
Writing a YouTube description that is easy to read:
- Start with a one- or two-line hook that explains the video, since that is what shows before “…more”.
- Use your main keyword naturally in the first sentence, in plain text rather than styled letters.
- Add chapters with timestamps starting at 00:00 so viewers can jump straight to key moments.
- Group links, gear and credits under short headings, with dividers between sections.
- End with a call to subscribe and up to three relevant hashtags, which YouTube can show above your title.
After you format your text, you can paste it into YouTube video and Shorts descriptions, posts, your channel description, comments and replies, in YouTube Studio or the YouTube app. Because the styling uses Unicode characters, the same text also works in Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook and LinkedIn. For Reddit’s Markdown formatting, use Teasoft’s Reddit Text Formatter instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make text bold in a YouTube description?
Select your text and click B. The tool turns it into Unicode bold letters, which keep their style when you paste them into the Description box in YouTube Studio.
How do I make text italic, underlined or strikethrough on YouTube?
Select the text and click I for italic, U for underline or S for strikethrough. Each style uses Unicode characters, so it shows in descriptions, comments and posts.
Is this YouTube text formatter free?
Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up, no limits and no watermark on your text.
Is my text private?
Yes. All formatting runs in your browser. Your description is never sent to a server or stored by Teasoft.
Does the formatting work on iPhone, Android and desktop?
Yes. Unicode styled text shows in the YouTube app for iPhone and Android and on youtube.com in desktop browsers. A few older devices or fonts may show some symbols as empty boxes, so keep fancy fonts for short highlights.
How do I add bullet points or a numbered list to a YouTube description?
Select the lines and open Lists. Choose bullets, arrows, checkmarks, numbers or emoji numbers. Each line gets its own symbol, ready to paste into YouTube.
How do I add timestamps or chapters to my description?
Type each timestamp on its own line followed by the chapter name, starting with 00:00. YouTube needs at least three timestamps, each chapter at least 10 seconds long. Keep the timestamps as plain numbers, not styled digits, so YouTube can detect them.
What is the YouTube description character limit?
YouTube video descriptions can hold up to 5,000 characters. The counter above the editor shows your current length, so you can see how much space is left.
Do styled letters and emojis count towards the character limit?
Yes. Styled letters, symbols, dividers and emojis all count toward the 5,000-character limit, and some emojis and symbols can count as more than one character. Check the counter before you paste.
Why does my styled text show as boxes or question marks?
Some older phones, browsers or fonts do not include every Unicode style, so they show empty boxes instead. Bold, italic and bold italic are the most widely supported styles.
Does formatting affect YouTube SEO?
Styled Unicode letters are not always read as normal words by YouTube search or Google, so a keyword written in fancy letters may not be found. Keep keywords and your opening sentence in plain text, and use styling for headings and highlights.
Is styled text accessible for screen readers?
Not always. Screen readers may spell out Unicode styled letters one by one or skip them, so use them for short highlights and keep important information in plain text.
How do I remove formatting from my text?
Select the text and choose Clean up → Clear styling. The tool turns styled letters back into plain text, and you can also tidy spacing or remove blank lines.
How do I add line breaks and spacing to a YouTube description?
Press Enter for a new line and leave a blank line between sections. Use Clean up → Space out lines to add space between every line, or Tidy spacing to fix extra gaps from pasted text.
Can I add dividers and emojis?
Yes. Open Insert to add dividers such as ━━━━, ════ or ✦ ✦ ✦ and popular emojis like 👇 🔔 ✅ and 🎯 at your cursor.
Does YouTube have built-in bold and italic?
Only in comments: wrap text in *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic and -hyphens- for strikethrough. Video descriptions have no built-in formatting, which is why this tool uses Unicode styled text instead.
Can I use this formatted text in comments and other apps?
Yes. Paste it into YouTube comments, replies, posts and your channel description, or into Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook and LinkedIn, where Unicode styled text also shows.
How do I save my description for later?
Click Download to save your description as a .txt file. You can reuse it as a template for future videos and paste it back into the editor any time.
