What Is an ICO File, and Why Convert PNG to ICO?

PNG to ICO conversion turns a PNG image into an ICO file, the icon format used for website favicons and Windows icons. One ICO file can contain several sizes (for example 16, 32 and 48 px), so the right size is shown in browser tabs, bookmarks, taskbars and desktop shortcuts.

An ICO file is a special image container made for icons.

Unlike a normal image, a single ICO can hold several versions of the same picture at different sizes. Software then picks the size that fits: a small one for a browser tab, a larger one for a desktop shortcut.

How to Add Your New Favicon to a Website

    Step 1: Upload the file

Upload favicon.ico to the root of your website, so it is available at yourdomain.com/favicon.ico.

Step 2: Link it in your page head

Add this to the of your pages:

    					<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="48x48">

Many sites also add a PNG or SVG icon alongside it for modern browsers, and an Apple touch icon (commonly 180 × 180 px PNG) for iPhones and iPads.

    Step 3: Check it

Clear your browser cache, reload the page and look at the tab. Favicons are cached heavily, so it can take a while to update.

Using WordPress or a website builder?

Many platforms have their own "Site Icon" or "Favicon" setting and may ask for a larger square PNG instead of an ICO. Check what your platform asks for.

Does the favicon matter for SEO?

A favicon isn't a ranking factor by itself, but Google can show it next to your site in search results, especially on mobile, which helps people recognise your brand. Google's guidelines say the favicon should be a square image whose size is a multiple of 48 px (for example 48 × 48, 96 × 96 or 144 × 144), so including a 48 px size is a good idea.

ICO is the icon file format used for website favicons and Windows icons. One ICO file can contain several sizes of the same image, so software can pick the right one.

Include 16, 32 and 48 px for standard use. Google recommends a favicon size that is a multiple of 48 px, so including 48 px is a good idea. Larger sizes such as 64 or 256 px can be added for sharper display or Windows icons.

Yes. Tick as many sizes as you want and the converter packs them all into a single ICO file.

Yes. Transparent backgrounds in your PNG stay transparent in the ICO.

The converter centres it instead of stretching it, so it may have empty space around it. For the best result, crop your image square first.

Use a square PNG at least as large as the biggest size you tick. A 512 × 512 px source works well for all sizes up to 256 px.

Favicons are very small, so detailed images and text lose clarity. Use a simple logo mark, and make sure your source image is large and sharp.

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Clear your cache, hard-refresh the page and check that the file is at the correct path and linked in your page head.

Yes. Add up to 50 PNG files in one batch, each up to 100 MB, and download the results as a ZIP.
