How Do You Generate a D&D Character Name?
To generate a D&D character name, pick a race such as Elf, Dwarf, Tiefling or Dragonborn, choose a class like Fighter, Rogue or Wizard, set Gender to Any, Male or Female, and click Generate names. The tool builds each name from sounds that suit the chosen 5e race, adds a fitting family or clan name, and gives you 12 original fantasy names in under a second.
Every D&D race has its own naming style. Elven names are flowing and musical, like Aelwen Starweaver. Dwarven names are short and strong, with a clan name such as Ironforge. Halflings have warm, homely family names, gnomes have playful tinkering names, half-orcs sound blunt and fierce, and some tieflings take a virtue name like Hope or Mercy. A name that matches its race makes your character feel at home in any campaign.
Names are created on your own device. The generator combines race-specific syllables and family names right in your browser, so names appear instantly and nothing is sent to Teasoft. Only when you click Get more with AI are your race, settings and the names on screen sent to the free Pollinations AI service to suggest more.

What Should I Do After Choosing a D&D Character Name?
Once you have the right name, use these free Teasoft tools to format it, style it and share your character with your party.
How to Generate a D&D Character Name
Pick a race
Choose your character’s race, such as Elf for flowing names, Dwarf for strong clan names or Tiefling for infernal and virtue names. Choose Any race for a mixed list.
Choose your settings
Pick a class, set Gender to Any, Male or Female, then choose First and family name for full names or First name only for short ones.
Generate and save
Click Generate names to get 12 D&D character names. Tap the star beside the ones you like, then copy them or download them as a .txt file.
Tip: say the name aloud as your Dungeon Master would at the table. If it is easy to say, easy to spell and does not sound like another character in the party, everyone will remember it. When a name fits, use the Title Case Converter to keep its capitalisation consistent in your character sheet, campaign notes and session recaps.
Which Race Should I Choose?
| Character | Race | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Classic adventurer from a kingdom or city | Human | Familiar, grounded names that suit almost any setting |
| Graceful, long-lived wizard or ranger | Elf | Flowing names with poetic family names |
| Character caught between two worlds | Half-elf | Names that mix human and elven sounds |
| Sturdy fighter, cleric or smith | Dwarf | Strong names with a proud clan name |
| Cheerful rogue or bard | Halfling | Warm first names with cosy family names |
| Inventor or curious illusionist | Gnome | Quirky names with a playful, tinkering feel |
| Proud warrior with draconic blood | Dragonborn | Bold names with a clan name |
| Fierce barbarian or brawler | Half-orc | Short, powerful names with fierce surnames |
| Warlock or outsider with an infernal past | Tiefling | Infernal names or a chosen virtue name |
| Whole party, tavern or town of NPCs | Any race | A mixed list of names across every race |
Tips for choosing a great D&D character name
- Match the race. Use the naming style of your character’s people, so a dwarf sounds like a dwarf and an elf sounds like an elf.
- Keep it easy to say. Short names with clear sounds are easier for the whole table to remember.
- Make your party distinct. Avoid names that start with the same letter or sound like another character’s name.
- Let the surname tell a story. Family names like Ironforge or Stormwalker can hint at a character’s home, trade or past.
- Fit the setting. A grim campaign suits harder names, while a light-hearted game can use playful ones.
After you choose your D&D character name
- Test it at the table. Use the name in a short introduction or a line of dialogue to hear how it sounds next to the rest of the party.
- Search the name. Make sure it is not already a famous character from novels, games or official D&D adventures.
- Build the character. Add a background, alignment, ideals and a short backstory, and give your character a nickname or title if it fits.
- Share your character. Prepare your portrait with Remove Background and Resize Image, then introduce your hero with the Instagram Text Formatter.
