How Do You Unlock a PDF Online?
To unlock a PDF online, add your PDF, type its password in the Password box (or leave it empty if the file opens but blocks printing or copying), choose a resolution and click Unlock PDF. Then click Download to save the unlocked copy. It takes a few seconds per file and works on any device, with nothing to install.
Bank statements, payslips, tax forms and e-tickets often arrive locked with a password, and many shared PDFs block printing, copying or editing. Typing the password every time is tedious, and restrictions get in the way when you need to print, quote or archive a document. Teasoft gives you a clean copy that opens straight away in any PDF reader. Only unlock PDFs you own or have permission to use.
Everything happens on your own device. PDF.js opens your PDF with the password you enter and draws each page in high resolution. pdf-lib then builds a brand-new PDF from those pages and adds an invisible text layer so the text stays searchable, and JSZip bundles several unlocked files into one download. Your PDFs and passwords are not sent to Teasoft or anyone else, so you can safely unlock bank statements, contracts and personal documents.
What ends up in your unlocked PDF:
| Part of your PDF | In your unlocked PDF | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Password and restrictions | Removed | The new file opens without a password and allows printing, copying and editing in any PDF reader. |
| Pages and layout | Kept as they look | Each page is rebuilt as an image at the resolution you choose, so fonts, images and colors look the same. |
| Text | Searchable | An invisible text layer is added, so search (Ctrl+F) still finds words in the document. |
| Links, bookmarks and forms | Not kept | Links are shown but not clickable, bookmarks are dropped and form fields become part of the page. |
| File size | Often larger | Image-based pages take more space. Choose a lower resolution or use Compress PDF afterwards. |
| File name | yourfile-unlocked.pdf | Several unlocked files download together as one ZIP. |
Common reasons to unlock a PDF:
- Removing the open password from bank statements, credit card bills and payslips you receive every month.
- Printing a PDF that has printing turned off by its owner restrictions.
- Copying text from a protected report, contract or e-book you are allowed to use.
- Opening password-protected tax forms, invoices and e-tickets without typing the password every time.
- Archiving or sharing your own documents in a format anyone can open.
- Preparing a locked PDF for other tools, such as merging, compressing, splitting or signing.
What each control does:
| Control | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Your PDFs box | Holds the PDF files you want to unlock | Drop files here or click browse. Up to 50 files, 150 MB each. |
| Add | Adds more PDFs to the list | Unlock several files in one go. |
| Clear | Removes every file from the list | Start again with different PDFs. |
| Password | The password used to open the PDF | Enter it if the PDF asks for one. Leave it empty if the file opens but blocks printing or copying. |
| Resolution | 72, 110, 150, 200 or 300 DPI | 200 DPI is a sharp default. Use 300 DPI for printing, 110 or 150 DPI for smaller files. |
| Unlock PDF | Removes the password and restrictions | Click after adding files and choosing your settings. |
| Download | Saves the unlocked PDF, or a ZIP for several files | Click once your results are ready. |
Good to know
- You need the password to open a locked PDF. This tool removes a password you know. It does not guess or crack unknown passwords.
- Pages are rebuilt as images. The PDF looks the same and text stays searchable, but links, bookmarks and form fields are not kept.
- Files can get bigger. Higher resolutions give sharper but larger PDFs. Choose 150 DPI or use Compress PDF if the file is too big.
- Unprotected PDFs are left as they are. If a file has no password or restrictions, you get the original back with -unlocked added to its name.
- Up to 500 pages per PDF. Only the first 500 pages of longer documents are included, to keep your browser responsive.
What You Can Do With This Tool

- Remove owner restrictions. Print, copy and edit PDFs that had those actions blocked.

Which PDF Tool Should I Use?
Use Unlock PDF when a PDF asks for a password or blocks printing, copying or editing. Once your file is unlocked, these tools help you shrink, combine, split, edit, sign or secure it again.
How to Unlock a PDF (3 Steps)
Add your PDF
Drop one or more PDFs into the Your PDFs box, or click browse. You can add up to 50 files of up to 150 MB each.
Enter the password and choose a resolution
Type the password if the PDF asks for one, or leave it empty for files that only block printing or copying. Pick a resolution, then click Unlock PDF.
Download your unlocked PDF
Click Download to save yourfile-unlocked.pdf, or a ZIP if you unlocked several files. A quick security check may run the first time, but your PDFs always stay in your browser.
Tip: if you see “The password is wrong”, check Caps Lock and extra spaces, and read the email or letter that came with the file, since bank and tax PDFs often explain how their password is formed. If the unlocked PDF is too large to email, run it through Compress PDF.
Which Resolution Should I Use?
| What you are unlocking | What to choose | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| A bank statement, bill or payslip | 150 DPI | Clear text at a modest file size |
| A contract or report you will read on screen | 200 DPI (default) | Sharp text that looks like the original |
| A document you will print | 300 DPI | Print-quality pages, with larger files |
| A PDF you will email or upload to a portal | 110 DPI | Smaller files that are still easy to read |
| A very long PDF, or one opened on a phone | 72 or 110 DPI | Faster unlocking and less memory use |
| A PDF with small print, maps or drawings | 300 DPI | Fine detail stays readable when you zoom in |
Getting better results when you unlock a PDF
- Type the password exactly. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check Caps Lock and spaces.
- Leave the password empty for restricted files. If the PDF opens without a password but blocks printing or copying, no password is needed.
- Match the resolution to the job. Use 300 DPI for print and 110 to 150 DPI for email.
- Unlock long files on a computer. Large, image-heavy PDFs need more memory than most phones have.
- Check before you share. Open the unlocked PDF and scroll through every page to confirm it looks right.
After you unlock your PDF
- Make it smaller. Use Compress PDF before you email or upload the file.
- Combine it. Use Merge PDF to join it with other documents.
- Split it. Use Split PDF to keep only the pages you need.
- Protect it again. Use Protect PDF to add a password of your own before you share it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I unlock a PDF online?
Add your PDF, enter its password if it asks for one, choose a resolution and click Unlock PDF. Then click Download to save the unlocked copy. It usually takes only a few seconds.
Is Teasoft's Unlock PDF tool free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up, no account and no watermark on your PDF.
Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?
No. Your PDFs are unlocked inside your browser and never leave your device. Only a short security check is sent to Teasoft to block automated abuse, never your files or your password.
Can I unlock a PDF without the password?
Yes, if the PDF opens freely but blocks printing, copying or editing. Leave the Password box empty and the restrictions are removed. If the PDF needs a password to open, you must enter it. The tool does not guess or crack passwords.
What is the difference between an open password and restrictions?
An open (user) password is needed to view the PDF at all. Owner restrictions let anyone open the file but block actions such as printing, copying or editing. This tool removes both.
Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
Unlocking is generally fine for PDFs you own or have permission to use, such as your own bank statements or payslips. Do not remove protection from documents you are not authorized to access or share.
Will the text in my unlocked PDF be searchable?
Yes. Pages are rebuilt as images and an invisible text layer is added, so you can still search for words. Links, bookmarks and form fields are not kept.
Why is my unlocked PDF larger than the original?
Each page is saved as a high-resolution image, which takes more space than the original text. Choose a lower resolution such as 150 DPI, or use Compress PDF after unlocking.
Which resolution should I choose?
200 DPI is the default and works well for most documents. Use 300 DPI for printing, 150 DPI for everyday files, and 72 or 110 DPI for the smallest files.
Can I unlock several PDFs at once?
Yes. Add up to 50 PDFs of up to 150 MB each. The password you enter is used for every file, so unlock files with different passwords in separate batches. Several unlocked files download together as one ZIP.
What happens if my PDF is not password protected?
It is left unchanged and returned with -unlocked added to its name, so nothing about the file is altered.
Why does it say the password is wrong?
Passwords are case-sensitive. Check Caps Lock, extra spaces and the instructions that came with the file, then try again.
What is my unlocked PDF called?
It keeps your original file name with -unlocked added, for example statement-unlocked.pdf. Several files download as a ZIP, such as teasoft-unlock-pdf-3-files.zip.
How large can my PDF be?
Up to 150 MB per file and 500 pages per PDF. Large or image-heavy files take more time and memory, especially on phones.
Can I unlock a PDF on my phone?
Yes. It works in Chrome and Safari on Android and iPhone. Add your PDF, enter the password and download the unlocked file.
Do I need Adobe Acrobat or any other software?
No. Everything runs in your web browser. There is nothing to download or install, and you do not need Adobe Acrobat.
Does it work on Windows, Mac and Linux?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on any desktop or laptop, with nothing to install.
What should I do after unlocking my PDF?
Open it and check every page. Then use Compress PDF to make it smaller, Merge PDF to combine it with other files, or Protect PDF to add a new password before you share it.
