How Do You Convert a PDF to Word?
To convert a PDF to Word, add your PDF, choose a conversion mode (Editable text or Page images), then click Convert to Word and download the .docx file. Teasoft's PDF to Word converter runs entirely in your browser, so your documents are never uploaded to a server.
PDFs are great for sharing but hard to change. When you need to fix a typo in a resume, update an old contract, reuse text from a report or edit a form someone sent you, a Word document is far easier to work with. This converter gives you a standard DOCX file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and WPS Office.
Everything happens on your own device. With Editable text, your browser reads each page with pdf.js, an open-source PDF library, groups the words into lines and paragraphs, and rebuilds them as real Word text. Font sizes and indents are kept, larger text is set in bold so headings stand out, and every PDF page becomes its own Word page at the same page size. With Page images, each page is drawn as a high-quality image and placed on a full Word page, so the document looks exactly like the PDF, but the text cannot be edited.
What ends up in your Word file:
| Part of your PDF | With Editable text | With Page images |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Real, editable and searchable Word text | Part of the page image, not editable |
| Layout | Paragraphs, font sizes and indents are kept; complex layouts are simplified | Identical to the original PDF |
| Headings | Larger text is set in bold so headings stand out | Exactly as in the PDF |
| Images, charts and tables | Images are not included; table text comes through as plain paragraphs | Kept as part of each page image |
| Fonts | Text is set in Arial | Original fonts, shown as part of the image |
| Page size | Same as the PDF, one Word page per PDF page | Same as the PDF, one Word page per PDF page |
| Scanned pages | No text to read, so page images are used automatically | Kept as images (no OCR) |
Common reasons to convert a PDF to Word:
- Editing a resume, CV or cover letter you only have as a PDF.
- Updating contracts, agreements, letters and templates.
- Reusing text from reports, notes and study material without retyping it.
- Correcting typos or outdated details before sending a document again.
- Filling in forms and applications that were shared only as a PDF.
- Adding PDF pages to a Word report as exact page images.
What each control does:
| Control | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Add / drop area | Adds PDF files to the list. Drag and drop, click Add, or browse. | At the start, or to add more PDFs before converting |
| Conversion | Picks Editable text or Page images | Editable text to change the words; Page images when the exact look matters |
| Convert to Word | Converts every PDF in the list to a .docx file | After choosing the conversion mode |
| Download | Saves one Word file, or a ZIP with all of them | When the results are ready |
| Clear | Empties the list so you can start again | When you added the wrong files or want a fresh batch |
Each Word file keeps the name of the original PDF with a .docx extension, so report.pdf becomes report.docx.
Good to know
- Password-protected PDFs can't be converted. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF.
- Need only a few pages? Extract them first with Split PDF, then convert the smaller file.
- Scanned PDFs are not OCR'd. If a PDF has no selectable text, page images are used automatically, so the Word file looks right but the text is not editable.
- Complex layouts are simplified. Editable text keeps paragraphs, font sizes and indents, but images, tables, columns and links are not rebuilt.
- Want a PDF again after editing? Turn your document back into a PDF with Word to PDF.

Which PDF Tool Should I Use?
Use PDF to Word when you need to edit the text of a PDF. If you need to unlock, split, shrink or reformat a file instead, one of these tools may be a better fit:
How to Convert PDF to Word (3 Steps)
Add your PDF file
Drag and drop, click Add, or browse to pick your PDF. You can add up to 50 files, each up to 150 MB.
Choose a conversion mode
Pick Editable text to change the words in Word, or Page images to keep every page looking exactly like the PDF.
Convert and download
Click Convert to Word, then Download. One file downloads as a .docx; several files download together as one ZIP file.
Tip: for the cleanest result, use Editable text on PDFs where you can select the text. If you only need a few pages, extract them first with Split PDF.
Which Conversion Mode Should I Use?
| What you have | Mode to choose | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| A text-based PDF you want to edit (resume, letter, report) | Editable text | Real Word text you can change, with font sizes and indents kept |
| A form, certificate or designed page that must look the same | Page images | Pages that look identical to the PDF |
| A scanned document or a photo of a page | Either (page images are used automatically) | Pages as images; the text is not editable |
| A PDF full of tables, charts or columns | Page images, or Editable text for the words only | The exact look, or editable text in a simpler layout |
| A long report you will edit and reprint | Editable text | Editable paragraphs; add images back in Word if needed |
Getting better results when you convert
- Check that the text is selectable. If you can highlight words in the PDF, Editable text will work well.
- Unlock protected files first. The converter can't open PDFs that need a password.
- Convert very long files in parts. PDFs over 500 pages, or very large scans, convert more smoothly when split.
- Use a computer for big batches. Phones have less memory for long or image-heavy PDFs.
- Review the layout in Word. Re-add images or rebuild tables where needed after converting.
After you convert your PDF
- Turn it back into a PDF. Use Word to PDF once your edits are done.
- Reduce file size. Use Compress PDF to make the new PDF small enough to email or upload.
- Combine files. Use Merge PDF to join several documents into one.
- Protect it. Use Protect PDF to add a password before you share it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a PDF to Word?
Open Teasoft's PDF to Word tool, add your PDF, choose Editable text or Page images, then click Convert to Word and download your .docx file. Most documents convert in a few seconds.
Is the PDF to Word converter free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up, no subscription and no watermark on your Word files.
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No. Your PDFs are converted in your browser on your own device. They are never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone else.
Can I edit the Word file after converting?
Yes. With Editable text, the words in your PDF become real Word text that you can change, format and search in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or WPS Office.
What is the difference between Editable text and Page images?
Editable text rebuilds the words as Word paragraphs you can change. Page images places each page in Word as a picture, so it looks exactly like the PDF but the text cannot be edited.
Will my formatting stay the same?
Editable text keeps paragraphs, font sizes, indents and page size, and sets larger text in bold for headings. It uses Arial and does not rebuild images, tables, columns or links. Choose Page images if the document must look identical.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?
Yes, but scanned pages have no selectable text and the tool does not use OCR, so they are added to Word as page images. The file will look right, but the text will not be editable.
Are images and tables kept in the Word file?
With Page images, yes, as part of each page. With Editable text, images are not included and text from tables comes through as plain paragraphs.
How many PDF files can I convert at once?
Up to 50 PDFs in one go, each up to 150 MB and 500 pages. When you convert more than one file, they download together as a single ZIP file.
What Word format do I get?
You get a .docx file, the standard Word format. It opens in Microsoft Word 2007 and later, Word for Mac, Google Docs, LibreOffice and WPS Office.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
No. A PDF that needs a password to open can't be converted. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF, then convert the unlocked file.
Why is some text out of order or missing?
PDFs with several columns, text inside tables or unusual fonts can be hard to rebuild as Word paragraphs. If the result looks wrong, try Page images to keep the exact look.
Can I convert PDF to Word on my phone?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari and other modern browsers on Android and iPhone. Very large or long PDFs convert more smoothly on a computer.
What will my Word file be called?
Each Word file keeps the name of the original PDF with a .docx extension. Several files download together as one ZIP file.
Does the tool add a watermark?
No. Teasoft never adds a watermark, logo or extra page to your Word documents.
Do I need Microsoft Word to use this tool?
No. You don't need any software to convert. To open the .docx file you can use Microsoft Word or free apps like Google Docs and LibreOffice.
Is there a page limit?
Each PDF can have up to 500 pages. For longer documents, split the PDF into parts with Split PDF and convert each part.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes, to open the page and load the PDF libraries. After that, the conversion happens on your device and your files are not sent anywhere.
