How Do You Split a PDF File?
To split a PDF file, add your PDF, choose Page ranges, Every page or Every N pages, then click Split PDF and download your files. Teasoft's PDF splitter runs entirely in your browser, so your documents are never uploaded to a server.
Sending a 40-page PDF when someone needs only two pages is slow and awkward. Upload portals reject files that are too large, and sharing the whole document can expose pages that should stay private. A PDF splitter solves this by pulling out just the pages you need, or breaking a long file into smaller PDFs that open on any phone or computer.
Everything happens on your own device. Your browser reads each PDF with pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library, copies the pages you choose into new documents and saves them right there. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe to use for private files such as ID cards, certificates, mark sheets, bank statements, contracts and signed forms.
What ends up in your split PDFs:
| Part of your PDF | In the split files | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Pages and their content | Copied exactly as they are | Text, images, scans and drawings are not recompressed, so quality stays the same. |
| Page size and orientation | Kept for every page | A4, Letter, Legal and landscape pages stay exactly as they were. |
| Page order | Follows the range you type | Type a range backwards, such as 10-1, to get the pages in reverse order. |
| File names | Based on the original name | For example report-pages-1-3.pdf, report-page-4.pdf or report-selected.pdf. To combine split files again, use Merge PDF. |
| Bookmarks and fillable form fields | May not carry over | Fill in forms before you split. The pages themselves look the same. |
Common reasons to split a PDF file:
- Uploading only the pages a job, university or government portal asks for.
- Pulling one certificate, mark sheet or ID page out of a scanned bundle.
- Sending a single invoice or one month of a bank statement instead of the whole file.
- Sharing one chapter of a book, report or study material.
- Breaking a large PDF into smaller files to fit email and upload size limits.
- Removing blank, duplicate or confidential pages before you share a document.
What each control does:
| Control | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Add / drop area | Adds PDF files by drag and drop or from your device. Up to 50 files, each up to 150 MB. | At the start, or any time you want to split more files with the same settings. |
| Split by | Page ranges extracts the pages you type. Every page saves each page as its own PDF. Every N pages cuts the file into parts of equal length. | Choose Page ranges for a few pages, Every page for single sheets, and Every N pages for long documents. |
| Pages box | Takes page numbers and ranges separated by commas, such as 1-3, 5, 8-. A trailing dash means to the last page. | With Page ranges, to choose exactly which pages to keep. |
| Put the selected pages in one PDF | Saves all your ranges together in a single file instead of one file per range. | To delete unwanted pages: type the pages you want to keep and tick this box. |
| Clear | Empties the file list. | When you added the wrong file or want to start again. |
Each file in the list shows a thumbnail of its first page and its size, so you can check you have the right document. When the split is done, every new file is listed under Results. One file downloads as a PDF, and several files download together as one ZIP.
Good to know
- Only PDF files are accepted. To turn images into a PDF first, use JPG to PDF.
- Password-protected PDFs can't be split. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF, then split.
- Damaged PDFs can't be split. If a file won't open in your PDF reader, remove it from the list and try again.
- Page numbers must exist in the file. Typing page 12 for a 10-page PDF shows an error, and choosing every page in one file is not a split, so pick fewer pages.
- Big files need more memory. Files are split in your browser, so very large PDFs can be slow, especially on phones. If it struggles, split one file at a time, then shrink the results with Compress PDF.

Which PDF Tool Should I Use?
Use Split PDF when you need only some pages of a PDF, or want to break a long document into smaller files. To do the opposite and join several PDFs into one, use Merge PDF. If your files are photos or scanned images, turn them into a PDF with JPG to PDF first. The tools below help with the next step.
How to Split a PDF File (3 Steps)
Add your PDF file
Drag and drop, click Add, or browse to pick your PDF. You can add up to 50 files, each up to 150 MB, and split them all with the same settings.
Choose how to split
Pick Page ranges and type pages like 1-3, 5, 8-, or choose Every page or Every N pages. Tick the box to put the selected pages in one PDF.
Split and download
Click Split PDF, then Download. One result downloads as a PDF, and several results download together as one ZIP file.
Tip: for job, university or government applications, extract only the pages the portal asks for, such as one certificate or the first page of a mark sheet. If the file is still over the size limit, such as 2 MB or 5 MB, shrink it with Compress PDF.
Which Split Option Should I Use?
| What you want | Option and what to type | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Extract a few pages | Page ranges, for example 2, 5-7 | One PDF for each range: page 2 and pages 5 to 7. |
| Delete pages you don’t need | Page ranges with the pages to keep, for example 1-4, 7-, and tick Put the selected pages in one PDF | One PDF without pages 5 and 6. |
| Every page as its own file | Every page | One PDF per page, such as report-page-1.pdf, report-page-2.pdf. |
| Equal parts of a long document | Every N pages, for example 10 | Files of 10 pages each. The last file holds whatever pages are left. |
| Pages in reverse order | Page ranges, for example 10-1, and tick Put the selected pages in one PDF | One PDF with the last page first. |
A trailing dash means to the last page, so 8- takes page 8 to the end. A leading dash means from the first page, so -3 takes pages 1 to 3.
Split PDF or Merge PDF?
| Choose | When |
|---|---|
| Split PDF (this tool) | You have one PDF and need some of its pages, or several smaller files. |
| Merge PDF (Merge PDF) | You have several PDFs and want them in one document. |
Does splitting reduce quality? No. Pages are copied into the new files as they are, so text, images and scans look the same as in the original.
Can I delete pages from a PDF with this tool? Yes. Type the pages you want to keep, tick Put the selected pages in one PDF, and the pages you left out are removed from the new file.
Getting better results when you split PDFs
- Check the page count first. Open the PDF so you know which page numbers to type.
- Use a trailing dash for the rest. Typing 8- saves you from counting the last page.
- Tick one PDF to remove pages. Type the pages to keep and combine them into a single file.
- Unlock protected files first. A password-protected PDF can't be split, so remove known passwords with Unlock PDF.
- Split one big file at a time on phones. Large PDFs use a lot of memory, so work in smaller batches.
After you split your PDF
- Make the files smaller. Use Compress PDF to fit email and upload limits such as 2 MB or 5 MB.
- Fix page direction. Use Rotate PDF to turn sideways or upside-down pages.
- Join pages from different files. Use Merge PDF to combine your split files with other PDFs.
- Keep it secure. Use Protect PDF to add a password before you share the file.
