How Do You Generate a Dwarf Name?

To generate a dwarf name, pick a clan type such as Mountain, Hill, Deep, Forge, Warrior or Merchant, set Gender to Any, Male or Female, and click Generate names. Choose Name and clan, Name and epithet, or First name only. The tool builds strong dwarven names, adds a fitting clan name or epithet and a distinctive trait, and gives you 12 original names in under a second.

Dwarf names are short, strong and full of pride, and the clan name often tells you what the family does. Mountain dwarves live in high halls, like Duruek Craghall, while hill dwarves brew and farm, like Berewyn Barrelbrew. Deep dwarves mine the dark, like Kazuzia Coalvein, forge dwarves craft runes, like Koreild Runehand, and warriors carry grudges into battle, like Gardis Grudgehewer. Merchants count coins, like Calbert Ledgerseeker, and epithets such as Ale-Belly add a touch of humour.

Names are created on your own device. The generator combines dwarven syllables, clan names, epithets and traits right in your browser, so names appear instantly and nothing is sent to Teasoft. Only when you click Get more with AI are your clan type, settings and the names on screen sent to the free Pollinations AI service to suggest more.

What You Can Do With This Tool

How to Generate a Dwarf Name

      Pick a clan type

Choose your dwarf’s clan, such as Mountain for proud halls, Deep for miners or Forge for smiths. Choose Any dwarf for a mixed list.

      Choose your settings

Set Gender to Any, Male or Female, then choose Name and clan, Name and epithet, or First name only.

      Generate and save

Click Generate names to get 12 dwarf names with traits. Tap the star beside the ones you like, then copy them or download them as a .txt file.

Tip: say the name aloud as if your dwarf were announcing their clan at a great hall. If it is easy to say, easy to spell and does not sound like another character in the party, everyone will remember it. Use the trait as a roleplay hook, and keep the name consistent on your character sheet with the Title Case Converter.

Tips for choosing a great dwarf name

After you choose your dwarf name

      • Test it at the table. Use the name in a short introduction to hear how it sounds next to the rest of the party.
      • Search the name. Make sure it is not already a famous character from novels, games or official D&D adventures.
      • Build the character. Add a clan history, a craft, a grudge and a goal.
      • Complete your world. Name your dwarf’s hold with the Fantasy City Name Generator and prepare your token art with Remove Background.
