How Do You Merge PDF Files?
To merge PDF files, add two or more PDFs, use the up and down arrows to set the order, then click Merge PDFs and download your combined file. Teasoft's PDF merger runs entirely in your browser, so your documents are never uploaded to a server.
Sending five separate PDFs is messy. Attachments get missed, many online forms accept only one file, and printing everything in the right order takes extra work. A PDF merger solves this by joining all your PDFs into one document, with the pages in exactly the order you choose, that opens on any phone or computer.
Everything happens on your own device. Your browser reads each PDF with pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library, copies every page into a new document in the order you set, and saves the result as one PDF right there. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe to use for private files such as ID cards, certificates, mark sheets, bank statements, contracts and signed forms.
What ends up in your merged PDF:
| Part of your PDFs | In the merged file | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Pages and their content | Copied exactly as they are | Text, images, scans and drawings are not recompressed, so quality stays the same. |
| Page size and orientation | Kept for every page | A4, Letter, Legal and landscape pages can sit together in one file. |
| File order | Follows your list, top to bottom | Move files with the up and down arrows before you merge. |
| Page order inside each file | Unchanged | To use only some pages, split the file first with Split PDF. |
| Bookmarks and fillable form fields | May not carry over | Fill in forms before you merge. The pages themselves look the same. |
Common reasons to merge PDF files:
- Uploading one application file to a job, university or government portal that accepts only a single PDF.
- Combining ID proof, certificates and mark sheets into one document.
- Joining invoices, receipts or bank statements for accounts, tax filing or expense claims.
- Putting chapters, assignments or project reports together into one file.
- Attaching one PDF to an email instead of many separate files.
- Creating one print-ready file so every page prints in the right order.
What each control does:
| Control | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Add / drop area | Adds PDF files by drag and drop or from your device. Up to 50 files, each up to 150 MB. | At the start, or any time you need to add more files to the list. |
| Up and down arrows | Move a file earlier or later in the merged PDF. The top file comes first. | To put a cover page or application form first and keep chapters or dates in order. |
| Remove and Clear | Remove takes one file off the list. Clear empties the whole list. | When you added the wrong file or want to start a new merge. |
Each file in the list shows a thumbnail of its first page, its size and its page count, so you can check you have the right documents. The finished file is named merged.pdf and shows the total number of pages before you download it.
Good to know
- Only PDF files are accepted. Add at least two .pdf files. To turn images into a PDF first, use JPG to PDF.
- Password-protected PDFs can't be merged. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF, then merge.
- Damaged PDFs can't be merged. If a file won't open in your PDF reader, remove it from the list and try again.
- Bookmarks and form fields may not carry over. Every page looks the same, but bookmarks and fillable fields from the original files may be missing. Fill in forms before you merge.
- Big merges need more memory. Files are merged in your browser, so many large PDFs can be slow, especially on phones. If it struggles, merge in smaller batches, then merge the results, or shrink large files first with Compress PDF.

Which PDF Tool Should I Use?
Use Merge PDF when you have several PDF files and need one document with all the pages in order. To do the opposite and pull pages out of a PDF, use Split PDF. If your files are photos or scanned images, turn them into a PDF with JPG to PDF first. The tools below help with the next step.
How to Merge PDF Files (3 Steps)
Add your PDF files
Drag and drop, click Add, or browse to pick your PDFs. Add up to 50 files, each up to 150 MB. You need at least two to merge.
Put them in order
Use the up and down arrows to move each file. The file at the top comes first in the merged PDF. Remove any file you don't need.
Merge and download
Click Merge PDFs, then Download. You get one PDF, named merged.pdf, with every page from every file in the order you set.
Tip: for job, university or government applications, put the documents in the order the portal asks for, usually the application form first, followed by certificates, mark sheets and ID proof. If the merged file is over the portal’s size limit, such as 2 MB or 5 MB, shrink it with Compress PDF.
How Should I Order My PDFs?
| What you are merging | Suggested order | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Job or college application | Application form or CV, then certificates and mark sheets, then ID proof | Follow the portal’s own document checklist if it has one. |
| Invoices, bills or statements | Oldest to newest, by date | Start file names with the date so they are easy to arrange. |
| Project report or thesis | Cover page, contents, chapters, then appendix | Merge after your final edits so you only do it once. |
| Scanned documents | Front of each page, then the back | Fix sideways scans first with Rotate PDF. |
| Papers for a meeting | Summary first, then supporting files | Keep the total size small enough to email. |
These are starting points. Open the merged PDF and flip through it before you send or upload it.
Merge PDF or JPG to PDF?
| Choose | When |
|---|---|
| Merge PDF (this tool) | Your files are already PDFs and you want them in one document. |
| JPG to PDF (JPG to PDF) | Your files are photos or scanned JPG images and you want to turn them into a PDF. |
Does merging reduce quality? No. Pages are copied into the new file as they are, so text, images and scans look the same as in the originals. The merged PDF is usually about the size of all your files added together.
Can I merge only some pages? This tool merges whole files. To use only certain pages, pull them out first with Split PDF, then merge the result.
Getting better results when you merge PDFs
- Name your files in order first. Names like 01-form.pdf and 02-certificate.pdf make the list quick to check and arrange.
- Check the thumbnails and page counts. They help you spot a wrong, blank or duplicate file before you merge.
- Unlock protected files first. A single password-protected PDF stops the merge, so remove known passwords with Unlock PDF.
- Compress once, after merging. It is quicker, and you can check the final size against the upload limit.
- Merge in batches on phones. For very large files, merge a few at a time, then merge those results into one PDF.
After you merge your PDFs
- Make the file smaller. Use Compress PDF to fit email and upload limits such as 2 MB or 5 MB.
- Fix page direction. Use Rotate PDF to turn sideways or upside-down pages.
- Take out pages you don’t need. Use Split PDF to extract the pages you want to keep.
- Keep it secure. Use Protect PDF to add a password before you share the file.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I merge PDF files?
Open Teasoft's Merge PDF tool, add two or more PDFs, arrange them with the up and down arrows, then click Merge PDFs and download your combined file. It takes only a few seconds in any modern browser.
How do I change the order of the files?
Use the up and down arrows next to each file in the list. The file at the top becomes the first pages of the merged PDF, and the rest follow in order.
Is the Merge PDF tool free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no hidden charges.
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No. Your PDFs are merged in your browser and never leave your device, so it is safe for private and confidential files.
Does merging PDFs reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied into the new PDF without recompression, so text, images and scans look exactly as they did in the original files.
How many PDF files can I merge at once?
Up to 50 PDFs in one go, each up to 150 MB. You need at least two files to merge.
Is there a page limit?
There is no fixed page limit. Very long or very large files depend on your device's memory, so on phones it is best to merge them in smaller batches.
Can I merge PDFs with different page sizes?
Yes. Every page keeps its own size and orientation, so A4, Letter, Legal and landscape pages can sit together in one PDF.
Can I merge only certain pages from a PDF?
This tool merges whole files. Pull out the pages you need first with Split PDF, then merge those files.
Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
No. A PDF that needs a password to open can't be merged. If you know the password, remove it with Unlock PDF first, then merge.
Why is my merged PDF so large?
Pages are not recompressed, so the merged file is about the size of all your PDFs added together. To make it smaller, use Compress PDF after merging.
Will bookmarks and form fields be kept?
The pages and everything on them are kept. Bookmarks and fillable form fields from the original files may not carry over, so fill in any forms before you merge.
Which file types can I merge?
PDF files (.pdf) only. Turn images into a PDF with JPG to PDF, or Word documents with Word to PDF, then merge them.
What is the merged file called?
It downloads as merged.pdf. You can rename it on your device after downloading.
What is the difference between merging and splitting a PDF?
Merging joins several PDFs into one document. Splitting does the opposite and pulls pages out of a PDF into separate files. Use Split PDF for that.
Will my merged PDF have a watermark?
No. Your merged PDF contains only your own pages, with no watermark or logo added.
Can I merge PDF files on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in the browser on Android phones and iPhones, as well as tablets, Windows PCs and Macs. No app is needed.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes, to open the page, load the PDF engine and run the security check. The merging itself happens on your device, and your files are not uploaded.
