How Do You Crop an Image Online?
To crop an image online, add your image, drag the box over the part you want to keep, choose a shape (rectangle or circle) and, if you need one, an aspect ratio such as 1:1 or 16:9, then click Crop image and download it as JPG, PNG or WebP. Teasoft's cropper works in your browser, so your image is never uploaded.
Cropping cuts away the parts of a picture you don't want, so the part you keep fills the frame. People crop to remove empty space or a distracting background, to make a picture fit a required shape (a square profile photo, a wide YouTube thumbnail, a tall Story), to centre on a face or product, or to prepare a photo for a form that asks for a particular shape.
This tool gives you three ways to set the crop. You can drag the box on the image, you can lock the box to an aspect ratio so it keeps the right shape as you drag, or you can type exact pixel values for X, Y, width and height when you need precision. You can also switch the shape to a circle, rotate or flip the image, and set an output width.
Cropping is not resizing. Cropping removes part of the picture and keeps the pixels of what is left. Resizing changes how many pixels the whole picture has. If a form asks for a particular width and height in pixels, crop first to get the right shape, then use the Image Resizer to set the size (or use Output width here to scale the crop).
Common reasons to crop an image:
- You need a square or circular profile picture.
- You want a picture in the right shape for Instagram, YouTube, Stories, Reels or Pinterest.
- You want to cut out empty space or distractions and centre on the subject.
- A form or portal asks for a particular shape, such as a passport-style photo.
- You need an exact area of an image, for example from a screenshot.
- You want to straighten a picture by rotating or flipping it as you crop.
What each setting does:
| Setting | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Rectangle / square, or Circle. | Circle for round profile pictures and avatars. |
| Aspect ratio | Locks the box to a shape, or leaves it free. | When the picture has to fit a particular place. Free for anything. |
| Crop area (X, Y, W, H) | The box position and size in pixels. Type exact values or drag. | For precise crops. Arrow keys nudge by 1 px, Shift for 10 px. |
| Rotate & flip | Turn 90° left or right, or flip horizontally or vertically. | Sideways photos, or mirrored pictures. |
| Save as | Same as original, JPG, PNG or WebP. | JPG for photos, PNG for lossless or transparent areas, WebP for smaller web images. |
| Output width | Resizes the crop to this width, keeping proportions. Optional. | When you want a specific width, such as 1080 px. |
| Reset crop | Puts the box back to its starting position. | When you want to start again. |
Good to know
- Cropping can't add detail. If you crop a small part of a low-resolution picture and then enlarge it, it will look soft. Start from the largest original you have.
- Saving as JPG re-saves the file. JPG is a lossy format, so saving a cropped JPG re-encodes it. Save as PNG if you need lossless output, and keep your original.
- Cropping removes pixels for good. Keep your original file in case you want a different crop later.
- This tool crops one image at a time. For many images at once, use the Image Resizer or the compressors for bulk work.

Which Image Tool Should I Use?
Use Crop Image to cut away part of a picture or change its shape. If you want to change its pixel dimensions, use the Image Resizer. If you need a correctly sized ID photo, use the Passport Size Photo Maker.
How to Crop an Image (3 Steps)
Add your image
Drag and drop it, click Add, or press Ctrl+V to paste. Teasoft accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, SVG, AVIF and HEIC, up to 100 MB.
Set the crop
Choose a shape and an aspect ratio (or leave it on Free), then drag the box and its corners over the part you want to keep. For an exact crop, type values for X, Y, W and H. Use Rotate & flip if the image needs turning. Nudge the box with the arrow keys.
Crop and download
Choose Save as (JPG, PNG or WebP), set an Output width if you want one, click Crop image, check the result and click Download.
Tip: if you plan to resize or compress the picture as well, crop first. Cropping out the parts you don’t need makes the next steps give a better result.
Which Settings Should I Use?
Which aspect ratio should I choose?
| Ratio (tool label) | Best for | Example size |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Any crop with no fixed shape. | Any. |
| Original | Cropping while keeping the photo’s own shape. | Same shape as the photo. |
| 1:1 (square, profile) | Profile pictures, avatars, square posts, product tiles. | 1080 × 1080 px |
| 4:5 (Instagram post) | Portrait feed posts. | 1080 × 1350 px |
| 9:16 (Stories, Reels) | Stories, Reels, Shorts, TikTok, phone wallpapers. | 1080 × 1920 px |
| 16:9 (YouTube, HD) | YouTube thumbnails, video covers, presentations, banners. | 1280 × 720 px |
| 4:3 (standard photo) | Older monitors, tablets, classic photos. | 1600 × 1200 px |
| 3:4 (portrait) | Portrait photos and prints. | 1200 × 1600 px |
| 3:2 (camera photo) | Photos from most cameras, and 6 × 4 in prints. | 1800 × 1200 px |
| 2:3 (Pinterest, print) | Pinterest pins, 4 × 6 in portrait prints. | 1000 × 1500 px |
| 7:9 (Passport 35×45) | Passport-style photos in the 35 × 45 mm shape. | 35 × 45 mm shape |
| Custom | Any other ratio, such as 21:9 or 5:7. | Your own ratio. |
Example sizes are common ones, not rules, and platforms change their guidance. Check the place you are uploading to. Set the Output width to get the width you want, and the height follows from the ratio.
Cropping to a circle
Choose Shape: Circle and drag the circle over the face or subject. Circles are perfect for profile pictures and avatars. A circle picture is still stored as a rectangle with the corners left empty, so save it as PNG or WebP to keep the corners see-through. JPG can’t hold transparent areas.
Cropping to exact pixels
Type the values you need for X (distance from the left), Y (distance from the top), W (width) and H (height), all in pixels. This is helpful for cropping the same area from screenshots, or when a form asks for an exact area. Use the arrow keys to nudge the box by 1 px, or Shift plus an arrow for 10 px.
Which format should I save as?
| Choose | When |
|---|---|
| Same as original | You want to keep the file’s type. |
| JPG | Photos, and forms or sites that ask for JPG. Smallest simple choice for photos. |
| PNG | Lossless output, screenshots, graphics, or a circle with see-through corners. |
| WebP | Smaller files for websites and apps that accept WebP. |
The best order: crop, resize, compress
- Crop to the right shape and framing.
- Resize to the pixel size you need (or use Output width).
- Compress if there is a file size limit, with the Image Compressor or a KB target tool.
Doing it in this order spends your pixels and file size on the part of the picture you actually need.
Tips for a good crop
- Leave a little breathing room around faces and products instead of cropping tightly on the edge.
- Use rule-of-thirds thinking: put the subject slightly off centre unless the picture has to be centred.
- For a profile picture, put the face in the middle, with the eyes in the upper half of the frame.
- Crop from the biggest original you have, so you keep enough pixels.
- Keep your original file in case you want a different crop later.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I crop an image online?
Open Teasoft's Crop Image tool, add your image, drag the box over the part you want to keep, choose a ratio if you need one, click Crop image and download the result. It works in your browser and your image is never uploaded.
How do I crop an image to a circle?
Choose Shape: Circle, drag the circle over the part you want, click Crop image, and save as PNG or WebP so the corners stay see-through. JPG can't hold transparent areas.
How do I crop an image to a square?
Choose the 1:1 aspect ratio, drag the square over the part you want and click Crop image. Use Output width to set the size, for example 1080 px for a square post.
How do I crop an image to a specific size in pixels?
Type the exact X, Y, width (W) and height (H) values in the Crop area boxes, or lock a ratio and set an Output width. If you need an exact width and height in pixels for the whole image, crop first and then use the Image Resizer.
What ratio should I use for an Instagram post?
Use 4:5 for a portrait feed post or 1:1 for a square one. Platforms change their guidance, so check the current recommendation where you are uploading.
What ratio is a YouTube thumbnail?
16:9, for example 1280 × 720 px. Choose 16:9 in the aspect ratio list and set the Output width to 1280.
What ratio is a Story or Reel?
9:16, for example 1080 × 1920 px. Choose 9:16 in the aspect ratio list.
What is the difference between Free and a fixed ratio?
With Free, you can drag the box to any shape. With a fixed ratio such as 1:1 or 16:9, the box keeps that shape as you drag. Use Custom for a ratio that isn't listed.
What is the difference between cropping and resizing?
Cropping cuts away part of the picture. Resizing changes how many pixels the whole picture has. To get an exact width and height, crop to the right shape first, then resize.
Does cropping reduce the quality?
Cropping itself doesn't blur or degrade the pixels you keep. Saving as JPG re-encodes the file, which can lose a little quality. Save as PNG for lossless output. If you use Output width to enlarge a small crop, it will look softer.
Can I rotate or flip the image while cropping?
Yes. Use Rotate & flip to turn the image 90° left or right, or to flip it horizontally or vertically, then set your crop.
Can I crop a passport photo?
The 7:9 ratio gives the 35 × 45 mm shape, so you can crop a photo to that shape. For country-specific sizes, a head guide, background colours and print sheets, use Teasoft's Passport Size Photo Maker. Always check the official rules for your application.
What file types can I crop?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, SVG, AVIF and HEIC, up to 100 MB. You can save the result as the original format, JPG, PNG or WebP.
Can I crop an iPhone HEIC photo?
Yes. HEIC is accepted. Save the crop as JPG if you need a file that opens everywhere.
Can I keep a transparent background?
Save as PNG or WebP if your image has transparent areas or you cropped to a circle. JPG can't hold transparency.
Can I crop several images at once?
This tool crops one image at a time. For batches, use the Image Resizer or the compressor tools.
How do I undo my crop?
Click Reset crop to put the box back to its starting position, then set it again. Your original file is never changed.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Cropping happens in your browser, and your image is never uploaded.
Can I crop images on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in the browser on Android, iPhone, tablets and computers. You do not need to install an app.
Is the Crop Image tool free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no hidden fees.
