How Do You Format CSS Online?
To format CSS online, paste your code into the CSS input box or click Upload to open a .css file, choose your indentation and layout under Settings, then click Beautify CSS. The clean code appears in the Result box, ready to Copy or Download as formatted.css. Click Minify CSS for a compact version instead, or Validate to check your braces, quotes and comments.
CSS is often hard to read: minified onto a single line, copied from browser DevTools, exported by a page builder or edited by several people with different habits. A CSS formatter, also called a CSS beautifier or pretty printer, gives every selector, rule and declaration a consistent layout so you can read, review, debug and compare stylesheets quickly. A CSS minifier does the reverse, removing spaces and comments so the file loads faster on your website.
Everything happens on your own device. Beautify uses js-beautify, a widely used open-source code formatter, to rebuild the indentation and line breaks of your stylesheet. Minify and Validate run on Teasoft’s own lightweight code in your browser. Your CSS is not sent to Teasoft or anyone else, so you can safely format code from private projects and client websites.
What changes in your CSS:
| Part of your CSS | When you beautify | When you minify |
|---|---|---|
| Indentation and line breaks | Rebuilt with 2 spaces, 4 spaces or a tab for each level. | Removed, so the stylesheet fits on one line. |
| Selectors and declarations | One declaration per line, and one selector per line if you choose. | Kept, with the spaces around { } : ; and , removed. |
| Comments | Kept where they are. | Removed, except comments that start with /*!. Untick the option to keep them all. |
| Blank lines | Up to 2 existing blank lines kept, plus an optional blank line between rules. | Removed. |
| Properties and values | Unchanged. | Unchanged. Only the last semicolon before each } is dropped. |
| Quoted strings and URLs | Kept exactly as written. | Kept exactly as written. |
Common reasons to format CSS
- Reading minified CSS from a theme, plugin or live website to find the rule you need.
- Cleaning up CSS copied from browser DevTools, a page builder, the WordPress Customizer or an email template.
- Making a stylesheet consistent before a code review or Git commit, so diffs show only real changes.
- Finding a missing closing brace, bracket or quote that breaks every rule after it.
- Minifying custom CSS before adding it to a live website to reduce file size and load time.
- Learning CSS by seeing selectors, properties and media queries laid out clearly.
What each control does:
| Control | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| CSS input box | Holds the CSS you want to format | Paste or type code, or drop a .css or .txt file onto it. Files up to 10 MB. |
| Upload, Paste, Sample and Clear | Opens a file, pastes from the clipboard, loads an example or empties the box | Click Sample to try the tool before using your own code. |
| Indentation | Sets 2 spaces, 4 spaces or a tab for each level | Match your project’s code style or .editorconfig. |
| One selector per line | Puts grouped selectors such as h1, h2, h3 on separate lines | Untick it to keep short selector groups on one line. |
| Blank line between rules | Adds an empty line after each rule | Makes long stylesheets easier to scan. |
| Keep existing blank lines | Keeps up to 2 blank lines you already had | Untick it for a tighter layout. |
| End with a new line | Adds a final line break to the result | Keeps Git, linters and editors happy. |
| Remove comments when minifying | Strips comments from minified CSS, except /*! comments | Untick it to keep every comment in the minified file. |
| Beautify CSS, Minify CSS and Validate | Formats, compresses or checks your code | Press Ctrl + Enter inside the input box to beautify quickly. |
| Copy, Download and Use as input | Copies the result, saves it as formatted.css or moves it back into the input | Use as input lets you beautify and then minify without copy and paste. |
Good to know
- Formatting doesn't change how your CSS works. Only spaces, line breaks and indentation change, so your page looks exactly the same.
- Validate checks structure, not rules. It finds unclosed braces, brackets, parentheses, quotes and comments. It doesn't check property names or values, so a typo like colr: red will still pass.
- Minify checks your code first. If a brace or quote is missing, it stops and shows the line and column, so it never produces a broken file.
- SCSS and LESS usually work. Common nesting and variables are formatted, but the tool is built for plain CSS, so check the result.
- Your code stays private. Nothing is uploaded or saved on a server, and your original file on your device is never changed.

How to Format CSS (3 Steps)
Add your CSS
Paste your code into the CSS input box, drop a .css file onto it or click Upload. Click Sample to try an example first. Files can be up to 10 MB.
Choose your settings
Pick 2 spaces, 4 spaces or Tab, then choose layout options such as One selector per line and Blank line between rules. Leave Remove comments when minifying ticked if you want the smallest file.
Beautify, then copy or download
Click Beautify CSS or press Ctrl + Enter. Your clean code appears in the Result box. Click Copy, or Download to save it as formatted.css.
Tip: keep a readable copy of your stylesheet for editing and use a minified copy only on your live website. To get one, click Use as input after beautifying, then Minify CSS. If you are tidying the page markup too, use the HTML Formatter.
Which Option Should I Use?
| Task | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Read minified CSS from a website | Beautify CSS | Restores line breaks and indentation so every rule is easy to find. |
| Make a stylesheet smaller for your live site | Minify CSS | Removes spaces, line breaks and comments to cut file size. |
| Find why styles stop working after a certain line | Validate | Points to the unclosed brace, bracket, quote or comment by line and column. |
| Match your team’s code style | Indentation + layout options | Choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs and how selectors and rules are spaced. |
| Keep a license notice in minified CSS | A /*! comment | Comments that start with /*! are kept even when other comments are removed. |
| Check property names and values | A CSS linter | Validate checks structure only, not whether each property and value is valid. |
Getting better results when you format CSS
- Validate first. If the output looks odd, run Validate to catch a missing brace or quote before you format.
- Match your project's indentation. Use the same setting as your code editor so Git diffs stay small.
- Keep comments while you work. Leave comments in your readable copy and remove them only from the minified file.
- Use /*! for notices. Start license or credit comments with /*! so they survive minifying.
- Test after minifying. Load the minified file on a test page to confirm everything looks the same.
After you format your CSS
- Check the result. Test the formatted or minified file on your page before you replace the original.
- Minify for production. Click Use as input, then Minify CSS to get a compact copy for your live website.
- Format your markup. Tidy the page that uses these styles with the HTML Formatter.
- Format your scripts. Clean up related code with the JavaScript Formatter.
